About Us

Street Voices is a band with a difference. It has a lively, mainly acoustic sound, meets regularly for practise, and is available for gigs large and small.

Its members are the vulnerably housed, people living in homeless hostels, and other members of the street community in Cambridge UK. The group provides an opportunity for people of any level of experience to bring their musical talents or just have a go, creating a lively musical mix that comes straight from the heart.

Street Voices enjoy playing to a variety of audiences. They have forged a special relationship with the ‘50 Plus’ group who also meet in the Akeman Street Community Room and at Christmas they perform together at a Christmas event.

The Street Voices sound includes guitar, harmonica, a variety of percussion, plus a range of vocal styles from folk to punk and back, taking in blues and rock on the way. Audience participation is usually a feature!

Street Voices leader Kay Barrett says:

‘When you listen to Street Voices, the depth of human experience in the group really shines through. Music is a beautiful way to communicate – it cuts across the barriers of suspicion and hostility to the common human condition we all share. Singing can be a wonderful and empowering thing for everyone, but how much more for people for whom it may be the only good thing happening in their lives.’
